The Introduction

The original play about Romeo and Juliet is written by William Shakespeare. He was one of the greatest dramatists the world has ever seen. The most famous plays he wrote are: “The Merchant of Venice” and of course Romeo and Juliet.

We have chosen to follow some of the original play. But the most of it is written by us.

We are going to play the famous balcony scene. In case you didn’t notice is John Harald supposed to be Juliet, and I am Romeo.

Romeo and Juliet live in Verona in Italy. They come from upper-class families with great influence, and much money. Juliet is a member of the Capulet family. Romeo on the other hand is a Montague. The two families are bitter and life-long enemies. They won’t have anything to do with each other.

Romeo and Juliet meet at a ball at Juliet’s place. That was the first time they saw each other, but still it was love at first sight. Later on that night Romeo climbs over the wall that surrounds the garden, and he hide behind a bush…

The Play

(Romeo gjemmer seg i buskene, kaster kongle på vinduet)

(Julie kommer ut på balkongen)

Romeo is that you?

(Romeo tar ut hodet av busken)

(Julie blir overasket)

‘O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou here?

I missed you. I can’t stop thinking about you.

I missed you too. But if somebody sees you here they will kill you.

I would rather be killed, than be without your love and live long years.

Can’t you just deny your father and refuse thy name

Maaayyybeee…

Isn’t your name Romeo and Montague.

Neither of them, since they’re an enemy to thee. I can change my name to … eh…Albert. It can be the end of our problems, and we can stay together.

Albert… Very catchy! But you’re still a Montague. And our families will forbid our relationship if they knew about it.

Why shall the name of our fathers stop us from loving each other?

But they don’t have to. We can move far, far away.

NO! We must show the world our love. So they too can love like I love you, Juliet.

I love you too and I can’t live without you. You are the only one for me,

And you Juliet are the most beautiful woman I have laid my eyes on.

Caress me. Give me a sign of your love.

(Romeo kisses Juliet)

Your hand is soft like the finest silk. Your voice is a little bit masculine and strong like the northern wind. And your hair seems like a waterfall on your face. Glorious and divine.

People have said that to me before, but not meant it like thee. Your eyes are like two stars on a dark night. But if you let me down-

I swear by the moon, that I’ll never leave you.

Oh, do not swear by the moon that changes every month. Then I would think that you are as changeable as it.

Then I swear by the--

NO! Do not swear at all if you really love me.

I do love you. I think I was born to be wild about you.

BORN TO BE WILD – ABOUT YOU.

I can think straight when I’m with you. It’s like we’re meant to be together.

Do you want to merry me?

Marriage? (Isn’t he going a little bit too fast (now)?)

Juliet, don’t you love me? I need you in my life.

Oh Romeo. I do accept your proposal. :)

I can’t wait another day.

I will write to you tomorrow. The note will contain the place and the time for the ceremony.

(The Nurse calls from within)

I’m coming.

Are you leaving me so unsatisfied?

What kind of satisfaction can you get to night?

I don’t know…

Come up, and then we’ll see.

(prove og komme opp, sangen: Satisfaction)

Avslutning

The next day they married in secret. But the marriage didn’t last long. Juliet was promised away to another man by her family. She didn’t know what to do, so she went to the local priest. He gave her a poison that made her unconscious for 24 hours. Romeo didn’t get the note that explained everything. So when he heard that Juliet was “dead” he went to the church as fast as he could.

He saw Juliet laying there. He ran towards her and killed himself next to her body. When Juliet woke up and saw Romeo, she killed herself too. The two families finally understood their hate towards each other was very wrong. Romeo and Juliet died in pain, but maybe not in vain.
