Net Force
The book I choose to read was Net Force by Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik.
It’s year 2010 and computers are in control of every square inch of the world. The man who manages these computers is also in control of the world. These hi-tech machines are wired up in a network called Net Force.

The director of the Net Force is assassinated and the deputy director (now assumed to continue the work where the last one left) must step in and figure out who and why. At the same time there are many attacks on the world’s computers by unknown terrorist groups, this is also the responsibility of the new director. The story proceeds as two separate investigations, alternating between agents at crime scenes in the field and government computer experts in Net Force labs. As the story unfolds the two investigations get closer to one another until they finally they are fully mixed up in eachother.

My opinion is that the language used in this book is quite heavy. I don’t know how many times I had to open the "Student Dictionary" just to look up some "hard-to-understand-word".
But the story and theme is awesome, this is a fantastic way of finishing a day of hard work.

This book was entertaining to read especially because it’s only eight years to 2010. The authors create some great characters and I especially liked the assassin. In 2010 computers are a very fundamental parts of our lives. They are involved in all facets of our daily routine and on the Internet are even more fantastic then it is now. People have to decide on a daily basis whether to deal with things on a real world (RW) or virtual reality (VR) basis. The Internet’s interface us via VR. You strap on a VR headset and choose the way in which you would like to experience the Internet. Maybe you want to experience the Internet from a cow’s point of view. Then all sites and persons on the net will be presented to you with a cow theme (they will look like other cows, flowers or maybe even trees). Imagine the Internet as the field and the information as cows, crazy? You got it. Again everyone else would appear as part of your world, regardless of how they may have chosen to cruise the Internet. A great concept that I am sure will come to fruition in the not too distant future.

While the story and characters are definitely the best I’ve seen, I would not recommend this book to “newbies”. But if you are a fan of the Internet or very good in English I still would recommend this book. It’s a great piece of science fiction. And I’m sure we all will be cruising the ’Net via VR before we know it.

PS. I read this book in less than a week, which means it’s good reading.

Five stars (six highest rating)
