This bookseries is very special in a way, because the real plot always gets covered up and forgotten due to other things happening in the story. It is filled with strange actions and witty comments, and I must confess; it made me laugh plenty of times.

In the series «The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy», written by the English author Douglas Adams, you meet with Arthur Dent; the relatively normal British man who just happens to find out that his friend Ford Prefect is from the planet of Betelgeuse. As the Earth gets destroyed by the Vogons, some horrifying aliens that never think of others but themselves, Ford and Arthur hitchhike their way to a random place in the universe. After a while they meet Trillian, who Arthur had a little thing for when they both lived on Earth, and Zaphod, Trillian's new boyfriend, a so-called 'douchebag' who just happens to be the President of the Galaxy.

I would say that the main plot of this bookseries is finding the question of Life, the Universe and Everything. Some millions of years ago, philosophers and scientists were so interested in finding the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything. Therefore they made this computer, called Deep Thought, which was supposed to calculate the answer. 7.5 million years of calculating, it came to the answer «42». The people could not understand what the computer meant, but then it said that if they wanted to know what the question of Everything was, they had to make another computer which was built to find out what the question was.

That computer also needed 7.5 million years to calculate it. The computer was round, which made some people mistake it for a planet. After a while people started living there, and they did not know what the computer, also called the Earth by some, really was. As I mentioned before – the Earth gets destroyed by the Vogons, right before it was going to reveal what the Question is. Now Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, Trillian and Slartibartfast (the man who designed Norway, actually, when they decided to make this computer) are on a travel, looking for the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything.

In the third book, which I read a while ago in English class, you meet again with Arthur – he is on Earth. Ford, Slartibartfast and himself had gone back in time and suddenly Ford had disappeared. He did not come back until about two years later, with no explanation but «I've been around». They then went back to the day when the Earth was meant to end. Yet they did not contact anyone there, because apparently 'talking to yourself does not teach you anything to your advantage'. After that they pay a visit to the planet called Krikkit, where the people who live there play cricket a lot.

Zaphod, the President of the Universe, who is also extremely eccentric and amnestic, gets broken up with by Trillian, and now he's all alone in his big ship, The Heart of Gold. Arthur gets kidnapped by Agrajag, a bat that had been killed by Arthur in all of his past lives. Now he is considering a payback. Luckily, Arthur gets away. On the planet of Krikkit, they are known for playing alot of cricket. To their surprise, they find out that there is something wrong with the balls they use. They find out that this is not an ordinary game of cricket.

Out of all the maincharacters that you meet in this story, you will probably connect the most with Arthur Dent. Probably because he is the most ordinary British adult man you could think of. He misses his tea, though, and he always tries to find a cup wherever he goes. He is always surprised, and I do not think he has even properly thought about the fact that all of this has actually happened to him. I do not think we ever got to know what he actually looks like, but according to the movie they made of the books, he has dark hair and brown eyes. Ford seems to be more of the careless type, he gets drunk pretty often and does not seem to bother about the events around him.

Personally, I think these books are highly fascinating. They make you think way more than you usually would, about things that you would not even consider before picking up one of the books. They can actually be pretty deep at times, as well. The book was also funny, and like I said; it made me laugh. It has a great sense of humour put into it, and I think it is cool that he managed to make a mix of sci-fi and comedy.
