It all starts when Harry was born. Harry and his parents were sleeping, when an evil wizard named Voldemort (they just call him you-know-who) breaks in to their house and kills Mr and Mrs Potter. Young Harry lying their in his crib, didn’t get killed. Instead of killing Harry, Voldemort just got weaker, he couldn’t kill Harry. So then instead Voldemort made a cursed scar on his forehead. And the scar looked like lightning.
The only family Harry’s got now is his uncle Vernon, aunt Petunia and his horrible cousin Dudley Dursley. They live in Privet Drive and are muggles (not magic people). And with this boring family, Harry’s going to live and grow up.
The years go by and Harry grows older. Right before he turns eleven the magic begins. Hogwarts (the magic school) sends an owl with a letter to Harry. Harry sees the letter, but the Dursley’s won’t let him read it. But it seems like Hogwarts notice that Harry haven’t read the letter, so they just keep on sending letters, until he has read one. On a Sunday morning uncle Vernon seems unusually happy. And why is that? That’s because there are no letters/post on Sundays. But there he was wrong. Suddenly there came letters flying through the chimney, through the letterbox, out of eggs when they open them in the kitchen, letters came everywhere in the house. Then uncle Vernon snapped, he was so angry that he moved them out to a lighthouse out on the sea. Where no one could find them. But this didn’t stop the wizards from getting to Harry. So Hogwarts sent Hagrid to get Harry.
This was the beginning of a new life for Harry.
Harry arrived at Hogwart, and he already made some friends on the way. Ron and Hermione. All the new students are divided in to their dormitory. Harry, Ron and Hermione are selected to live in a dormitory called Gryffindor.
The headmaster on the school is Albus Dumbledore. Other teachers are Professor Mc Gonagall, Madame Hooch, the stuttering Mr Fich, professor Quirrel and professor Snape.
Harry is selected to be the team seeker on the Gryffindor’s Quiddich team. He is the youngest seeker in a century, but it lies in the family. Because his father was a seeker to. Quiddich is a game were there are seven players on each team, and they all have there place on the field. Some might say it can remind you of soccer, but that’s just a little bit. They fly around on the field and they all have different things to do.
However, strange things are happening at the school. By accident Harry, Ron and Hermione find a big dog. A three headed dog, named Fluffy. This is Hagrid’s dog, and Hagrid is known for his mouth. He can’t keep a secret, so he accidentally tells them how to get trough Fluffy, put her to sleep. And in that way they find out what Fluffy are guarding. It’s the philosophers stone, a legendary stone. It can transform any metal in to pure gold, and produce the Elixir of life, which will make the drinker immortal. Eternal life and something so bad and evil you can’t imagine.
One night Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco Malfoy (who is the meanest boy in school) and Hagrid are going in to the dark forest. Students aren’t allowed in the dark forest, but tonight with Hagrid it is legal. They are out looking fore unicorns. Harry finds a unicorn, but someone is with the unicorn, Voldemort. Harry nearly gets killed, but a unicorn man named Firenze saves him. Firenze tells him to get out of the forest, it is too dangerous for Harry to be in the forest.
Harry has to prevent that anyone steels the stone and give it to Voldemort. And Ron and Hermione will help him. When they go to find the stone, suppose to go through Fluffy. Fluffy is already a sleep. There has been someone there before them. Along the way to the stone there are some tasks they haft to do. And the last one is to play chess, wizard’s chess. That’s a lot harder than ordinary chess. In wizard’s chess they break down each other, and that could be dangerous. And they haft to win, to get to the stone.
Harry comes into a room with a mirror. In there, professor Quirrel is. Harry stops and can’t understand why professor Quirrel is there. But then he realise. Professor Quirrel takes of a scarf from his head, and there is Voldemort. On the back of his head. It is they who want the stone.
Harry looks carefully in the mirror and finds out where the stone is. And he will do all I can in his power to prevent Voldemort from getting the stone. And Harry succeeds. He gives the stone to Dumbledore, and he destroys the stone.
The school year is over and Harry returns home, to the Dudley’s. Where he waits fore next year.
The whole book is very good. Nothing very special to put a finger on. Just one thing. The book doesn’t tell us anything about the teachers. I would like to get to know them a little better.
There aren’t any parts I like good and parts I find disappointing. The whole book is great. Just my stile, book I like to read. It is easy to read, the language is easy. But some places there are special words, like “muggles” and other words who have something to do with magic, and who aren’t that easy to understand. Some places I had to stop and think of what the word meant, before I could go one. But that’s just how the book is written.
The characters were some places described in a good way. I could see how the characters looked like, in my head. I think that those who read the book get individual perspective of the book and characters. It’s up to their imagine how the characters are.
- Most people have seen the movie or seen something from it in some way, before they have read the book. And in that way they get a clue of how they look and are.
The book I have been reading, I believe is the short version of this book. I think there is a book that is bigger. So the plot didn’t actually drag on. At least I don’t think so. But I have reason to believe that the big book probably drag on the plot.
The ending of the book was pretty normal. A happy ending. The ending was believable and satisfying.
- In the book we are told that they aren’t allowed to use magic in the muggles world. But do muggles know that? No they don’t.
- Harry says in the end of the book: “They don’t know we’re not allowed to use magic at home. I’m going to have a lot of fun with Dudley this summer…..”
And that is an ending that gets the reader to think. What is Harry going to do to Dudley? Their imagine starts to run, and they think.
I think the book is very good. It is easy to read and the writer has a way of writing so the reader starts to get nosy. You don’t always see what’s going to happen, and the writer uses classic narrative devices with flair and originality and delivers a complex and demanding plot in the form of a hugely entertaining thriller.
