Place of act: Northern Ireland, Belfast

Setting: There is a social barricade in the minds of the people in Belfast.

 

Persons:

Sadie Jackson – Protestant, 16 years old

Aggie Jakcson – Sadie's mom

Jim Jakcson – Sadie’s father

Tommy Jackson – Sadie's brother

Linda Mullet – Sadie’s old school friend, Tommy’s girlfriend

Jessica Mullet – Linda’s mother

Bill Mullet - Linda’s father

Kevin McCoy – Main person, 18 years old

Pete McCoy – Kevin’s father

Mary McCoy – Kevin’s mother

Brede McCoy – Kevin’s sister

Kate Kelly – Brede’s friend likes Kevin

Mr. (Dan) Kelly - Kate’s father. Kevin works for him in the scrapbuisness.

Mrs. Kelly - Kate’s mother, friend of Mrs. McCoy.

Gerald McCoy - Kevin’s little brother.

Uncle Albert - Kevin and Brede’s uncle.

Brian Rafferty - Kevin’s old friend, beats and threatens Kevin, disliked by Kevin. Gun.


Pat Rafferty - Brian’s father.

Mrs. Rafferty - Brian’s mother.

Moira Henderson - Friend and neighbor of Mr. Blake. 3 children who Sadie looks after. Catholic, married with a Protestant man.

 

Chapter 1

Sadie met Kevin in the street one day, by accident.

 

Sadie is a protestant and Kevin is a Catholic living in Belfast.

 

It's about three years since the last time they saw each other, so they go hand have a cup of coffee and talks about how the family and such has been the last three years. Kevin is working in the scrapbuisness, and Sadie is working in a hat shop. They walked up to Cave Hill. On the way they meets Linda Mullet, an old school friend of Sadie, and Tommy’s girlfriend. Linda don’t like that Sadie and Kevin hang together since he is a catholic and she is a protestant.

 

Chapter 2

Home at the Jacksons, where Sadie lives: Linda comes to see Tommy and tells Sadie’s parents that she saw Sadie and Kevin together. They don’t like it, especially not Sadie’s parents. 3 summers ago Sadie and Tommy got mixed up with Kevin and his sister Brede. Afterwards they became friends but had to part because it was too hard to stick together because of the fact that they were both Catholics and Protestants. Mrs. Jackson was very upset and thought Sadie would lead them in to trouble.

 

Chapter 3

Home with Kevin, his mother is worried, because Kevin has not come home yet, Uncle Albert comes to visit, and Brede goes to meet Kate, but runs into Brian, and they argue. The provisional’s were a splinter group from the IRA who only thought they could achieve a united Ireland by violence.

 

Chapter 4

Kevin and Sadie are on Cave Hill, afterwards she meets some friends, but they do not like Kevin because he is a Catholic. Kevin and Sadie argue about the difference of number of kids in their family, but they become friends again. They are walking hand in hand on the way home.

 

Chapter 5

Linda and Tommy are on a cafe, they meet Steve, Tommy’s friend, who is keen on Sadie, Sadie doesn’t like him, but he doesn’t know that. Steve told Linda and Tommy that he had joined the Lodge. He’s trying to convince Tommy to join too but Tommy doesn’t want to. (Long time ago there was a fight where Brede almost got killed, and then he decided not to ever walk in the Orange Parade). Tommy and Linda meet Kevin and Sadie on their way home. They say hello and Kevin goes home. Linda, Tommy and Sadie also but in another direction. Linda doesn’t like that Sadie is going with a Mick and they end up in a fight. When Sadie and Tommy get home Sadie argues with her parents about Kevin.

 

Chapter 6

Kevin goes home to tell Brede about his meeting with Sadie, and he tells her that he is seeing her again. Brede is not angry, but she believes it might be leading to troubles.

 

The next day Kevin runs into Brian, on his way to work. They talk about being ready to fight for their believes. When Kevin comes home from work, Brian is waiting for him, and Brian shows Kevin a gun Brian has bought.

 

Kevin gets pissed off, cause he things it is stupid and dangerous, because the army is around and search houses for guns and weapons.

 

Chapter 7

The main persons spend their whole day in Bangor. And in the end of the day, they have a fight about what they believe in. Sadie could not understand that Kevin could not confess to the priest about everything.

 

And Kevin could not understand that Sadie could worship statues and old people. Kevin left for a while, but came back. Then they got friends again. They kiss, and left in a car with Uncle Albert.

 

Chapter 8

On the way home, Albert’s car breaks down. They have to go the last bit home. They passed a burning truck which had been blown up by a landmine, and the driver was killed. When they are back in Belfast, they pass a battle between the army and some men’s. They leave Albert and Kevin is walking Sadie home. Then they met Jackson, Mullet and Tommy. It was 3 o'clock in the morning.

 

Chapter 9

They are angry, and almost starts a fight with Kevin. Kevin walks home, he heard a gunshot, throwed himself to the ground, and watched a victim get shot. He runs away and met Brian, he had heard about Sadie. They argue and Kevin goes home. The next day at evening. Kevin got attacked by three boys, they kicked his ass. One of them is Brian.

 

Chapter 10

Brede goes to talk with Sadie about Kevin, but at first she does not find her, but after a while she finds her, and they go and drink a cup of coffee. Brede is asking Sadie to not meet Kevin any more, for his own good.

Kevin and Sadie are having a date, but she does not know if she wants to go.

 

Chapter 11

Kevin is waiting for Sadie, she is late and he is very sick, he can barely stand. When he is about to leave Sadie arrives. She knows the old man, it is Mr. Blake. He was the old geography teacher. He is a protestant but he does not care that Kevin is a Catholic. Sadie tells Kevin that she has decided to not see him anymore since he can get hurt.

 

Chapter 12

They, included Blake, drives Kevin home, and they agree a meeting with Blake’s house on Friday. When Sadie gets home, she and Tommy suddenly hear a loud bang. Mrs. McCokney's shop had exploded. Mrs. McCokney died. Mrs. Mullet blamed Brede since she had been in the shop earlier to day.

 

Chapter 13

Blake and Sadie talked, and he offered Sadie to clean and steady his house every day for some money. She agreed.

 

Next door to Blake live Moira Henderson and her family. Moira is a Catholic and her husband is a Protestant. They’ve got 3 children and are very happy. She talks to Moira and see that she has a lot to do with the children. She offers to take care of the children in the afternoons so that Moira could paint as she actually does. Moira agrees and says that she’ll pay Sadie. Now Sadie’s got 2 jobs and she tells her mother and father.

 

On Friday Sadie and Kevin meet at Blake’s house. Kevin is much better, they are happy that Blake is letting them stay there.

 

Chapter 14

Kevin is still sick, and cannot go to work. He is restless and can't manage to sit inside the house. Uncle Albert comes to visit McCoy. He is telling them that the army has been searching every house in the street. They all go outside to see. Kevin was thinking of the gun in Brian's room. The army did not find anything there. Kevin stood next to Brian and Brian looked happy. Now McCoy’s turn had come.


 

Chapter 15

The army searched the house, but there was nothing to find. After they had gone to bed. The police came to pick up Kevin. They had found a gun at Mr. Kelly’s Scrap yard, and Kevin had the key to the yard. The army said that Kate Kelly had seen him put the gun in the scrap yard, Kevin saw that it was Brian’s gun. Kevin had to go to the police station, and his father followed him. In the morning Brede ran down to the police station and explained the relationship between Kate and Kevin. Kevin walked free, and stops to wait for Brian in an ally. He is going to beat Brian. Brede are following Kevin.

 

Chapter 16

Blake got a warning letter in the mail. He was warned for keeping Sadie and Kevin in the house. Somebody knew. Blake burned the letter so Sadie would not find it. Kevin comes back, with blood on his shirt, he had kicked Brian’s Ass. Next day, they all go for a ride in the car. When they had driven for a while they noticed that the wheel was loose, and they could not steer the vehicle. They crashed in a sea wall.

 

Chapter 17

People stopped to help them. The police come and they were brought to the nearest hospital for a check, they where all fine. The rapport showed that someone had loosened the wheels. But all of them say nothing to the police. Mr. Blake tells the police that he had got a threatening letter, when they are alone. He does not say anything to Kevin and Sadie. Kevin and Sadie decide that they were not to see each other so often. Maximum one time at the week. But Sadie is still going to wash Mr. Blake’s house. Kevin decided for himself, that he was never going to see Sadie again because it was too difficult. At the way, Kevin meets Mr. Kelly, and Kevin tells him that he did not bother to see him at work anymore, he got the sack. Kevin tells his family that he got the sack, and they are not happy about it. He tried to find work at the labor exchange, but they did not have anything to offer him

 

Chapter 18

Sadie waits for the call from Kevin, but he never called. The day when they should go in the Orange parade comes but Sadie takes a ride to Bangor. There she meets Kevin by accident. Sadie asked why he did not called, and Kevin said that it was smarter to don’t do it. Kevin tells Sadie that he is going to leave Belfast. Sadie very sad. They spent the whole day together but walked home each other for them self. When day when Kevin is out for a walk, he met Mr. Kelly which offered him his job back, but Kevin declined it. He hated everything except for Sadie. He would not stay there anymore.

 

Chapter 19

Sadie waked up one morning (as usual!) She was going to spend the day with Kevin, but told her parents that she was going over to the Henderson’s. Mike Henderson came to Sadie that morning with bad news. Mr. Blake had been killed when somebody had tossed a petrol bomb in his house. Mr. Henderson drove Sadie to the place where she was meeting Kevin, and she tells the bad news to Kevin. They were going to have a big funeral for him. After the funeral Kevin and Sadie walked to Cave Hill, and Kevin tells Sadie that he is going to leave Belfast next week, to move to England.

 

Chapter 20

Kevin says goodbye to everyone in his family. Brede walks with him for a while and Kevin promises to write to her. On the way they met Kelly, who told Kevin that it was Brian who made her to say that she saw Kevin putting the gun in the scrap yard. Then Kevin alone, meets Sadie, he was going to take the boat to Liverpool to move there. Then he meets Sadie which tells him that she wants to go with him. She bought a ticket, and they moved to Liverpool together, and lived happy together.
